that's the title of an article i read in The Straits Times today! i quote the article:

The world's official timekeepers have added a "leap second" to the last day of the year today, to help match clocks to the Earth's slowing spin on its axis, which takes place at ever-changing rates affected by tides and other factors.

Which means a countdown to 2009 will go something like this: "...THREE, TWO, ONE-AND-A-HALF, ONE... Happy New Year!"

The extra second was mandated by the International Earth Rotation and References Systems Service (IERS) in Paris, and is not to be taken lightly.

can you believe it?? i didn't even know an International Earth Rotation and References Systems Service existed! and i don't know why i find this so amusing, but it kind of is. okay anyway, since the year is coming to an end, it's time for a bit of reflection. 2008 has been a horrible year for me, and that's because i brought it upon myself. but next year, i'm going to sober up and make it the best year of my life. and to do that, i've decided on a few new year resolutions:

1. no more daydreaming during lectures and tutorials.
2. start being nicer.
3. ask more questions in class. no actually, start asking questions in class.
4. stop getting angry so easily. you would expect me to say control my temper, but that would mean actually getting angry first.
5. be patient.
6. grow up a bit.
7. stay fit.
8. spend more time with family.
9. whine less.
10. ACE THE A LEVELS.

and with that, 2009 will be a great year. friends please support me! especially with the being nicer bit. i've said that a hundred times before, but now i really mean it.

okay my trip to mombasa has been officially cancelled. both my tickets and registration. it's okay, not in my naseeb. i'll try again next year. but i still can't help feeling really upset.

i'm here blogging after checking my CONFIRMATION STATUS on the ejamaat website for the millionth time. and no, i still haven't gotten raza to attend the ashara in mombasa.

(for people who have no idea what i've been saying so far, let me try and help. raza means permission, ashara is this function i would like to attend, and mombasa is in kenya.)

i really really really want to go for the ashara, so i'm not going to give up hope yet, at least not until my mom and i have no choice and have to cancel our tickets this evening. i've been really excited (and a little scared) about this, and i don't want it to fizzle down into disappointment just yet. and even if i don't get it by this evening, it's okay, life's like that. maybe it's not in my naseeb, and i'll try again next year. but for now, i'll still continue checking my status, hopefully it will show 'Confirm Print Raza Letter' soon.

anyway, on a lighter note, maryam and i went jogging again, and then this time we went to the jetty to sit around. haha i realise today had been the first time i'd even seen the jetty, the last time i jogged by that area it was still under construction x) anyway the point of me telling you guys this is because i would like to show everyone how lame PUB is. this was what i saw as i walked towards the jetty:

i think that life can be pretty unfair. i guess i whine about it sometimes, but then again, who doesn't? but at least i know i'm not the type to sit and complain and admit defeat. sometimes when life is unfair, i choose to believe that maybe something else is in store for me, something better. so there's nothing for me to bury my head in my hands and cry about. what has happened, has happened. nothing's going to change the past. if there's something i have even a little bit of control over, it's my future. and there's no way in hell i'm gonna let past failures and unfairness screw it up.

because whatever happens, it happens for the best.

i can't stand the way the world works sometimes.

i have another 40 questions to go and i'm super exhausted with this stupid maths marathon. and i especially hate that this topic keeps reminding me of pw: why differentiate? integrate!

yes indeed.

and so i went jogging at the reservoir this morning with maryam =)but what i dont understand is how she can still look so pretty even though we had just jogged and were all sweaty and stuff! and i realise i havent seen her in a century, so more time was spent talking than jogging really, but we attempted! so must give us some credit okay. the reservoir is a much nicer place to jog than around my estate x) the air there is so nice and cold! the air here is so polluted haha i should go to the reservoir more often! yeah and met a bunch of juniors too haha my juniors are so hardworking, i'm embarrassed x)

speaking about hardworking, let's see, i have 73 more sums to do by monday.

oh crap.

and so a few of my favouritest girls came over yesterday to bake and waste time and immerse themselves in the indian culture x) and i was super happy coz we like haven't met in a century thanks to the holidays haha. so it was good catching up as well =) so sarah came over first and i have to say that sarah i'm super proud of you for using your hand to eat the chapatti and rice HAHA. aloo gobi (which os missed out on coz she's so busy working and didn't know how to fake diarrhea too well) and chicken curry was made, taking inspiration from bend it like beckham x)

and then hannah came, and sarah and hannah watched 'hum tum' (a hindi movie!) and enjoyed themselves thoroughly right?? hahaha coz the laughter still echoes x) now who says hindi movies are no fun!

then yen finally came over and the baking began x) i dont have that many photos, so you have to make do with what i have haha. most of the photos are with sarah, but she went to m'sia (AGAIN) so you have to wait till she gets back for more x)

and those are our unbaked cookies! now if you look closer...

we dedicated one of them to a teacher whom we will not name x) because it's obvious enough hello!

and so we put the cookies in for baking and guess what happens!

yes, we burnt them horribly x)

then huierh came! and she brought lovely pineapple tarts she'd made by herself =)

then we continued baking (carefully this time) and the rest of the batches came out okay =) and that's our baked teacher x)

okay anyway now i'm too lazy to upload the rest of the pictures here x) i'll just upload them on facebook maybe. so people like maryam/am, get a facebook account!! x)

and so anyway, i hope you guys liked the aloo gobi and curry and stuff haha and i hope you guys had fun! we must do this more often man =)

in other news, I'VE FINALLY BOUGHT MY SECRET SANTA PRESENT YAYZZZ. hope you like it when you get it secret santee x)

god do i hate maclaurin for making that stupid theorem. although i should actually be thankful coz it's quite simple and so that means easy marks in the exams, but seriously, did he have to make it so goddamn tedious! and so from my rants you can figure that another maths tuition session ended for me a while ago. and although i think my tuition teacher is extremely scary and i hate how he makes me feel stupid, i have to reluctantly, VERY reluctantly, admit that he is a really good teacher. my maths has improved leaps and bounds since i started maths tuition.

so anyway, he was complaining that he doesn't have many students now coz many of his students just had their A levels, so if anyone's interested in maths tuition call Mr Navin at 91777461! hahaha knock yourselves out. i'm such a wonderful student arent i x)

okay so tasneem tagged me to do this quiz thing on her blog, and so i shall try it out now!

oh oh bakra eid also means eid-ul-adha and also means hari raya haji for the malays. eid mubarak eid mubarak! oh my calender's one day earlier than the malays that's why we're celebrating today x) so selamat hari raya haji in advance my dear malay friends!
