that's the title of an article i read in The Straits Times today! i quote the article:

The world's official timekeepers have added a "leap second" to the last day of the year today, to help match clocks to the Earth's slowing spin on its axis, which takes place at ever-changing rates affected by tides and other factors.

Which means a countdown to 2009 will go something like this: "...THREE, TWO, ONE-AND-A-HALF, ONE... Happy New Year!"

The extra second was mandated by the International Earth Rotation and References Systems Service (IERS) in Paris, and is not to be taken lightly.

can you believe it?? i didn't even know an International Earth Rotation and References Systems Service existed! and i don't know why i find this so amusing, but it kind of is. okay anyway, since the year is coming to an end, it's time for a bit of reflection. 2008 has been a horrible year for me, and that's because i brought it upon myself. but next year, i'm going to sober up and make it the best year of my life. and to do that, i've decided on a few new year resolutions:

1. no more daydreaming during lectures and tutorials.
2. start being nicer.
3. ask more questions in class. no actually, start asking questions in class.
4. stop getting angry so easily. you would expect me to say control my temper, but that would mean actually getting angry first.
5. be patient.
6. grow up a bit.
7. stay fit.
8. spend more time with family.
9. whine less.
10. ACE THE A LEVELS.

and with that, 2009 will be a great year. friends please support me! especially with the being nicer bit. i've said that a hundred times before, but now i really mean it.
